We are under a Heat Advisory tomorrow, and it looks like a rough week ahead with regard to the combination of heat/humidity.

This past week, we had a heat-related death in Alabama when a young child was left in a hot car. It was an extreme case, left in there for five hours, but even five minutes is too long. People should not do this at all. “Beat the heat! Check the back seat!”

But back on a serious note, here is a guide to rip current safety for beachgoers.

DISCUSSION:

At 3 PM, skies are partly cloudy in Cullman. The temperature is 90 degrees. The dewpoint is 73 degrees, making the relative humidity 59%. It also makes the Heat Index 98 degrees. Winds are from the Southwest at 9 miles per hour. The pressure is 30.14 inches and falling slowly at the moment. The Low temperature this morning was 73 degrees.

It is mostly sunny in Jasper with a temperature of 81 degrees. The dewpoint is 77, making the relative humidity 89%. They are not as hot because they recently had a thunderstorm move through. Winds are calm. The pressure is 30.13 inches and falling slowly.

Haleyville is sunny and 84 degrees. The dewpoint is 76, making the relative humidity 77%. Winds are calm. The pressure is 30.14 inches/996.5 millibars and falling slowly.

The observations from Huntsville looks like they may be delayed by an hour, but I’ll give them anyway. It is partly cloudy and 92 degrees. The dewpoint is 71, making the relative humidity 51%. The Heat Index is 99. Winds are Southwest at 7 mph. The pressure is 30.12 inches/1019.1 millibars and falling.

And . . . there is something funky about the millibars here. The official NWS data is showing it much lower for Haleyville than Huntsville, which makes no sense with the conversion from inches of mercury.

I could tell Haleyville was the one that wasn’t right. That should be more like 1020.7 millibars. Not sure why it’s goofed up on the website.

It is mostly cloudy and 93 in Nashville. The dewpoint is 71, making the relative humidity 49%. And the Heat Index is 100 degrees. Winds are South at 13 mph, gusting to 16. The pressure is 30.08 inches/1017.6 millibars and falling.

We’ve got some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms bringing some relief from the heat today. Those are going to be more scarce next week. We’ve got upper-level ridging to our North and some strong surface high pressure that is going to build back over our region from the East. It is mainly centered over Florida and up into the Carolinas and Virginias right now.

This morning’s upper-air soundings from Birmingham and Nashville showed the moderate instability and basically nil wind shear we’d expect in this pattern.
