DISCUSSION:
Well, the rain moved out faster than expected, early this morning, and the clouds pretty much cleared out by Noon. We ended up with a sunny day across the Tennessee Valley this afternoon and evening. The High was 72 in Cullman, and the temperatures are going backwards. We have not reached our technical Low for today, but we’re currently at 48 degrees. Jasper is also at 48 degrees, clear skies and 50 degrees at Haleyville. Decatur is down to 54. We’ve got a gentle Northwest breeze tonight too. Much of the day was breezy, but that is also calming down to just some light winds. Huntsville sits at 59 degrees. It’s 56 at Muscle Shoals. Tupelo is 58 degrees. Memphis is 59. And Nashville is 54 degrees at this 8:00 hour.
That cold front is over into Georgia now, and the rain is down in Florida and a little bit lingering up in the Carolinas as well. High pressure is moving in from the Plains. And we’re in for a pretty chilly night.
This evening’s upper-air soundings show that really stable air moving back in.
That cold front did bring some thunderstorms with damaging winds to the Mid-South and up into the Midwest, parts of the Ohio Valley, and even into Virginia between yesterday and today. We had a couple tornado reports from Arkansas and a TDS - tornado debris signature - observed in Mississippi and Louisiana. No injuries have been reported. We also had sporadic tree and power line damage across North Alabama from gradient winds not associated with specific thunderstorms. That stayed pretty isolated, and basically what we got locally last night was some much-needed rain. It’s a drop in the bucket against our drought anyway, which I’m guessing won’t really break until November.
